LED Flares replace pyrotechnics in Finland

The Finnish boating and sailing federation will announce new 2017 inspection regulations for all club registered boats at the Helsinki boat show. New regulations give the option to fully replace all pyrotechnics with electronics (Class one still requires smokes).

This is great news for Daniamant and the ODEO Flare as we work to establish a real alternative and give boat owners a choice in their safety equipment.

Details of the new classifications with no rockets or flares are as follows:

Class 1, Open sea

  • EPIRB
  • DSC VHF, fixed mount
  • Mobile phone, weather proofed
  • 1pcs LED torch (with reserve batteries if AA battery operated)
  • 2pcs Orange smokes

Class 2, coastal waters

  • DSC VHF, fixed mount
  • Mobile phone, weather proofed
  • 1pcs LED torch (with reserve batteries if AA battery operated)

Recommended extras for class 2

  • EPIRB
  • 4pcs parachute rocket
  • 4pcs red torches

Class3, shoreline

  • Mobile phone, weather proofed
  • 1pcs LED torch (with reserve batteries if AA battery operated)
  • If sailing also on coastal water, DSC VHF is recommended

Recommended extras for class 3

  • 2pcs parachute rocket
  • 2pcs red torches

Class4, inland waters, only recommendations, no mandatory equipment

  • Mobile phone, weather proofed
  • 1pcs LED torch (with reserve batteries if AA battery operated)

All classes can still be equipped with old pyrotechnics regulations. Also all boats can be equipped with more than minimum requirements.

All pyrotechnics must be valid at the time of the inspection. All inspectors are volunteer members of their clubs and they are trained by the federation.

For EPIRB there will be a check for battery and MMSI, and for DSC VHF there will be a check for MMSI and GPS input.

All boats that are registered in Club register must be inspected each year before the season for the equipment and sailing condition, and every five years for hull.

Daniamant’s distributor, John Nurminen Marine Ltd is co-operating with the federation on material and offers for members at Helsinki boat show.

Previously Finland has led the field in its approach to new innovative solutions to replace pyrotechnics.

Odeo Flare™ is available from our distributor in Finland, John Nurminen who has worked tirelessly to ensure this alternative to pyro is recognised in this region.

They will be exhibiting at the Helsinki International Boat Show from 10th February to 19th February and will be happy to discuss the Odeo Flare™ with you.
